Are you being discriminated against. I found this very interesting article on this very subject. Employed vs. Unemployed... I would love to hear your comments on this one.

Job seekers have long known, of course, that it's easier to land a job when you are still working. There are no hard data on discrimination against the unemployed. But there have been reports from across the country of companies' making clear in job listings that they are not interested in people who are out of work. Employment experts say other companies have policies of hiring only people with jobs — but do not publicly acknowledge their bias.

At an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission hearing this year, Christine Owens, executive director of the National Employment Law Project, declared that "excluding the unemployed" is "becoming business as usual." Owens testified about a 55-year-old California woman who had applied for a job as a software-systems engineer. The recruiter for the position was enthusiastic until she learned that the woman had been out of work for six months. At that point, she told the woman she could not forward her résumé to the hiring company.

The apparent uptick in such incidents couldn't come at a worse time for the unemployed. The Great Recession has produced an unusually large number of long-term jobless. Forty percent of the nation's unemployed — some 4.4 million people — have been out of work for a year or more, the highest level since World War II. The long-term unemployed have far more difficulty finding work than people who have left the workforce more recently. The problem is worst for workers over 50, who often face age discrimination as well.

Some employers argue that they have a perfectly reasonable right to weed out the unemployed and that it is just good business. People who have lost jobs or have never been hired are less qualified as a group than those who are currently working, they say. People who are out of the workforce for a significant period of time may also have fallen behind in skills.

Keep on networking, applying, interviewing, and researching until you have a firm job offer in hand.

Are you still struggling with your job search, we are continuing with daily discussions why they are NOT CALLING YOU. You are more than qualified, so lets ask this question.

Are your expectations to high or unreasonable?

Yes, everyone wants the "perfect job". But, if your criteria is too high, if your being too demanding, you may well remain unemployed. Nobody wants to be told to compromise, but the fact is that much of life involves just that, at least temporarily.

     1. Analyze your wants and needs.
     2. Which are must haves?
     3. Which are negotiable?
     4. Which can be put on hold?

You must re-think your scenario at this time, look around, remember the crisis that we are ALL in. There is way to much competition right now, people are literally fighting for jobs just to survive, so if you are being to unreasonable; the next guy will be more than happy to settle for a little less and get the job that you were hoping for.

New Jobs At Fresh & Easy

Fresh & Easy arrives in Bay Area

Fresh & Easy on Tuesday put the finishing touches on new stores in Danville and central San Jose as it prepared for a grand opening Wednesday for the two markets, its first in the Bay Area.

The stores are the first of 13 that the retailer, a unit of England-based supermarket behemoth Tesco, is planning to open in the region during the coming months.

"We're very excited to have Fresh & Easy open up in town," said Joe Calabrigo, Danville's town manager. "We have been waiting for them for almost two years now."

The Fresh & Easy store in Danville is located at 460 Diablo Blvd., just east of Interstate 680. The store in central San Jose that will open this week is at 1409 Bird Ave., near Minnesota Avenue in the city's Willow Glen district.

"As a community, we are probably underserved by grocery stores and markets," Calabrigo said. "We really like their approach, organic foods, healthier foods, kind of a green approach."
The Fresh & Easy store in Danville is located at 460 Diablo Blvd., just east of Interstate 680. The store in central San Jose that will open this week is at 1409 Bird Ave., near Minnesota Avenue in the city's Willow Glen district.

Both the San Jose and Danville stores are laid out to feature produce and meat in the first couple of rows; milk and other dairy products down one side; and nuts, dried fruit cookies and crackers along the other wall.
In the center aisles, the stores will feature just about every kind of item that shoppers would find at a major supermarket.

"We have everything you need to run your household," said Brendan Wonnacott, a Fresh & Easy spokesman. After these first two stores are open, Fresh & Easy intends to open several other Bay Area stores in March. Those new stores are in Pacifica, Concord, Vacaville, Modesto and Walnut Creek.

In April, Fresh & Easy will open stores in Pleasanton, Hayward, Napa and western San Jose.
The grocery chain also plans to open at least two stores in San Francisco in the coming months.
"Fresh & Easy, Sprouts, Foods Co., they may all find things tougher than they might have imagined," Englehardt said. "Safeway has taken some moves to counter the competition, and they will take more measures to counter the competition."

Among the Safeway responses: The supermarket giant has decided to open six new or revamped stores in the Bay Area in 2011. One of those is a brand-new store in Pleasanton near Interstate 680 and Bernal Road. Still, Englehardt said he thinks that Fresh & Easy has made wise choices in the stores it has decided to open this week, along with the other sites.

"They will get some good customer samples in Danville and Willow Glen," he said. "In both of those areas, there is discretionary income and they are mature markets."
The new market entrants are expected to challenge incumbent chains such as Safeway and Lucky.

The Etiquette of Getting Hired

Manners matter – before, during and after an interview

You’re under the microscope while you’re on a job interview. Recruiters and interviewers are judging you every second. So to make the best impression – and maintain that excellent impression after you get the job follow these essential etiquette guidelines:

Be on time, if not early, for your interview, “Arriving early is good etiquette, since you may have to fill out an application and a releases form,” advises Kristin Urhausen, a former recruiting operations manager for accounting firm KPMG.

“We’ve had candidates arrive on time or slightly late, and then the time it takes them to fill out our paperwork pushes back their interview and throws our entire schedule off. Try to arrive 15 to 20 minutes earlier that your scheduled interview, and your consideration of us will reflect well on you.”

Come Prepared. “Bring extra copies of your resume so that we can pass them around to all of the interviewers who will be present. Be sure to bring your driver’s license and your Social Security card so that you’re able to deliver exactly what the interviewers require. And turn your cell phone off: Interviewees are immediately disqualified for checking a vibrating phone or answering a call.

Dress appropriately. Peggy Post, co-author of Emily Post’s The Etiquette Advantage in Business: Personal Skills for Professional Success (Collins Living), recommends researching the company. “Some businesses are more informal, and they may have a culture of being more dressed-down, “ while industries such as finance and law may be strictly suit and tie. “It’s okay to ask someone you know, either at that company or simply in that same field, for advice on the dress level – and then for your interview you should ‘dress up a notch.’ Wear something conservative and comfortable. Look your sharpest, “says Post. “Strive to be ‘clean and neat’ both in your dress and in your personal grooming. Appearance is very important on a job interview, so be impeccably groomed as a manner of good business sense and good etiquette. Candidates have been eliminated for having chipped nail polish, for instance.”

Have a good handshake. Interviewers are impressed by a quality handshake as well as good eye contact and body language that shows comfort and confidence. Be sure to shake the hand of the receptionist when you arrive, since front-office staff are often asked for their impression of your manners.

Have quality questions prepared in advance. “Ask about the direction of the company, what the teams are working on presently, not any what’s-in—it-for-me questions such as how many vacation and personal days you would get.”

Address people by name. Contrary to common etiquette beliefs, it is okay to address your interviewers by their first names. It’s fine to be casual, but professional, in an interview. If I introduce myself as Kristin Urhausen, it’s perfectly acceptable for you to say, ‘Kristin, thank you for meeting with me.” “You can’t go wrong, though, by using the more formal and respectful) Mister or Ms.

Don’t share too much personal information. “It’s important to build rapport with your interviewers, and the way to do that is through a good handshake, maintaining eye contact, smiling, being engaged and interested in your interviewers. This does not include sharing the sordid details of your breakup as the answer to, “So what brought you to this city?”

Follow up with a ‘thank you.’ Sending a thank you letter after the interview is crucial. Post has heard stories of people getting hired because they were the only ones to practice this essential standard of good etiquette. “Handwrite your thank-you on fine notepaper or a classic note card. Write neatly, spell everything correctly, be sincere, be concise – just a few sentences are all that’s necessary and send a thank you note to each of your interviewers within a day or two’s time.

Many job hunters wonder if it’s okay to email their thanks, and Post responds that it’s a good practice to send one after the interview as a first step, then follow up with the handwritten note. An emailed thank you note is okay because the interviewer may travel often, or they may work in a technology based field. You will stand out if you send both and email thank you and a print thank you.

There’s no need to send anything else. Do not send flowers or gifts after the interview, such extravagance could turn off the decision makers, since it might be seen as an attempt to buy their favor. And don’t ask how did I do? Or what are my odds? After the interview or in a follow-up email. That’s a big don’t.

How to Spot a Job Scam

Not every job scam is an outright con, many are just promises the employer can’t keep.

If a job sounds too good to be true, it probably is. So say employment lawyers and career coaches, who warn that, especially in this economy, employers may be making promises they can’t fulfill.

“There is a lot of fraud out there (in job postings),” said Barry Janay, an employment attorney who practices in New York. “The best way to prevent it is to do your research beforehand.”

Jill Knittel, an executive recruiter with ER Associates in Rochester, N.Y., said there are some companies that are taking advantage of the large number of people searching for jobs right now. “I recently spoke to a client who asked me about a job and said, ‘in my gut it didn’t sound right.’ I told him he needed to go with his gut.”

Both Janay and Knittel said there are certain things that, if you encounter them on your job search, are red flags that the opportunity may not be all that it promises. Be aware of these red flags, they warn, and investigate whether the employer can come through on what they promise.

■An unexpected call from a recruiter. You don’t know how the recruiter found you. “If you didn’t apply for it and they are contacting you through e-mail, that could signal a problem,” said Janay. He suggests a job seeker find out how this recruiter found your name, and whether the connection is legitimate.

■The job requires you to make an investment upfront. “Some companies are asking hires to pay for such things as training,” said Knittel. “Send X dollars and we’ll train you in how to do the job. Or, your salary will start once you make a sale. Take a job and don’t get paid? It’s not a good idea.”

■The job requires relocation. This doesn’t always mean the job is not legitimate, but it does require you to do much more research. Uprooting yourself, and your family, is not something anyone should jump into after a phone interview. At the very least, you should go to the new city to interview and see the business and working conditions for yourself.

■You are offered a job for which you know you are not entirely qualified. If the job doesn’t match up with your qualifications, said Janay, you need to ask why they would be soliciting you for that job. If you do accept a job where your skills don’t match the job description he advises that you get something in writing that states your employer recognizes that you do not have the experience or skills originally required for the job.

Not a job scam, but a false promise

Both Knittel and Janay say that a bad employment experience is less about outright scams and more about clarity on both sides of the offer; they say it is up to the job seeker to ask the right questions and do everything they can to protect themselves during the job search.

Tracey Bernstein, an executive attorney with the New York law firm Himmel and Bernstein, points out that “you have the most leverage before you start a job. Once you start, the ability to negotiate drops dramatically. So make sure you ask questions about compensation and job responsibilities before you start.”

Bernstein said people in sales jobs are especially vulnerable to employers who might take advantage of their situation.

Knittel agrees. “Sales jobs are heavily geared toward commission,” she says. “Candidates need to find out if what the employer is promising is realistic. Find out what your predecessor made. A lot of people are afraid to ask these questions. But they are a legitimate part of the interview process.”

Other questions to ask:

■When will I have a salary review? Not just a performance review, but a salary review.

■Whom will I be reporting to? It’s possible in this economy that things will change before you start your job, but it’s best to establish these relationships before you get onboard.

■Can we put this in writing? Whatever you agree to in the interview that is important for you to succeed in that job, whether it’s salary, reporting structure, expected work hours or title, ask that it be written down.

All agree this does not have to be a contract, just a written agreement. “It can even be in an e-mail,” says Bernstein. “You just want clarity on what you agreed to. If all you have is a verbal agreement, then you are going to have misunderstandings.”

Take some quiet time for yourself, you need to relieve some of the stress that is overwhelming you with your job search. People start obsessing with all of the negative things that are happening in their lives and it comes across in all of your reactions. Even if and when you receive a response from an employer there is this tone coming from deep down, most are losing confidence in themselves and have a panic/desperate tone. This is not what companies are looking for; even though you don't mean for it to come across; it is! Get your resume and cover letter ready, prepare all of the necessary material for your next interview; make sure you have that special outfit ready to go. Then, sit back daily, take even 20 minutes and do NOTHING. Do not think about finding a job, or debt, or any lack that is in your life right now. Give these 20 minutes to yourself to appreciate what you do have and look at all of the positive things that are coming to you, relax and let all of the stress go, just for a few minutes. Do not let society get the best of you, you are too important to not care for yourself. Then put a great big smile on your face and know that you can...

CINCINNATI (Reuters) - Deborah Coleman lost her unemployment benefits in April, and now fears for millions of others if the Senate does not extend aid for the jobless.

"It's too late for me now," she said, fighting back tears at the Freestore Foodbank in the low-income Over-the-Rhine district near downtown Cincinnati. "But it will be terrible for the people who'll lose their benefits if Congress does nothing."

For nearly two years, Coleman says she has filed an average of 30 job applications a day, but remains jobless.

"People keep telling me there are jobs out there, but I haven't been able to find them."

Coleman, 58, a former manager at a telecommunications firm, said the only jobs she found were over the Ohio state line in Kentucky, but she cannot reach them because her car has been repossessed and there is no bus service to those areas.

After her $300 a week benefits ran out, Freestore Foodbank brokered emergency 90-day support in June for rent. Once that runs out, her future is uncertain.

"I've lost everything and I don't know what will happen to me," she said.

The recession -- the worst U.S. downturn since the 1930s -- has left some 8 million people like Coleman out of work.

Unemployment has remained stubbornly high at around 9.5 percent. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in June 6.8 million people or 45.5 percent of the total are long-term unemployed, or jobless for 27 weeks or more.

Before the recession began in late 2007, the unemployed received benefits, usually a few hundred dollars a week, for 26 weeks or around six months after losing their jobs.

Under the federal/state programs, which are administered by state governments and partly funded by taxes on business, only full-time workers are eligible for benefits. Within federal guidelines, benefits and eligibility vary from state to state.

As the downturn left more Americans out of work for longer periods, Congress voted to provide funding to extend benefits to as long as 99 weeks in some areas.

Some critics say this adds to the country's large fiscal deficit, and may even discourage job-seeking.

FOOD BANKS FEAR STRAIN

An attempt to pass another extension has become bogged down in partisan political bickering in the Senate. Relief agencies fear that failure to extend benefits will strain their resources and may worsen the U.S. housing crisis.

"This will put a great deal of stress and strain on our organization, which has already been working hard," said Vicki Escarra, chief executive of Feeding America, which has a network of more than 200 food banks. In the year ended June 30, Feeding America distributed 3 billion pounds (1.36 billion kg) of food, a 50 percent increase over the past two years.

The benefits debate has pitted the majority of Democrats against most Republicans and some conservative Democrats.

When the House of Representatives passed a $34 billion benefit extension on July 1, 11 fiscally conservative Democrats voted against it. The Senate may take up the issue again in mid-July, but Republicans like Senator Tom Coburn have argued any extension must be paid for with cuts elsewhere.

"Even then he (Coburn) is not sure if that's a good idea," said John Hart, a spokesman for the Oklahoma senator. "The longer the unemployed have benefits, the less incentive there is to find a job."

Most economists argue that cutting benefits could slow recovery, describing benefits as direct economic stimulus because almost every penny of it gets spent. In a June 28 client note, Goldman Sachs said if all additional U.S. stimulus spending expires, it could slow the economy up to 1.5 percentage points from the fourth quarter 2010 to the second quarter of 2011.

The note added that extending unemployment benefits and a $400 tax credit would "substantially mitigate" that impact.

3 MILLION CUT OFF IN TWO MONTHS

During the Senate impasse, from the week ended June 5 to the week ended July 10, more than 2.1 million Americans lost their benefits. Another million will join them by July 31.

In Ohio alone, where unemployment stood at 10.7 percent in May, more than 83,000 people lost their benefits in June.

Sister Barbara Busch, executive director of non-profit housing group Working in Neighborhoods in Cincinnati, 65 percent of the people who come seeking help with their mortgages are unemployed or underemployed.

"I fear once the benefits run out, I suspect we'll see a new wave of foreclosures," she said. "I just hope I'm wrong."

Ohio is a bellwether U.S. state in elections. The state's Democratic attorney general Richard Cordray said blocking extending jobless benefits was politically motivated ahead of the midterm elections in November.

"If people lose their benefits they will blame the congressional majority and the administration," he said. "As unappetizing as it is, that would appear to be the strategy."

Senator Coburn's spokesman Hart said suggestions the Republicans were playing partisan politics were "ludicrous."

"The Democrats say that because they want to avoid making the hard decisions," he said.

Alonzo Allen, 55, a former aid agency worker in Cincinnati whose benefits will run out in September, spends two days a week volunteering at the food bank in Over-the-Rhine and the other three looking for work. He said he worries about the one-bedroom apartment he rents and how he will feed his dog Ginger, who is the "only family I have."

"If the benefits stop, I'll be out on the street and I'll lose all my furniture," he said. "That's going to be tough."

Whether the employment market is faltering or there are more positions than you can shake a stick at, it is always important to have a strong interview. Those who are out of work may be desperate to land a chance to get back to regular work, and anyone who hates their job will want to make a shining impression in their initial interview. This helps you stand out before the decision for an employee is made. If you stick out in their minds as a great value, you stand a better chance at landing the job. It is important to make a good impression as soon as you begin contact with your potential employer. As soon as you contact the company, you need to be professional, assured and confident. The letter you send and your professional resumes should be sharp and accurate. Using a resume writing service can sure up your introductory documents, and so they give the best impression of the type of employee you will be.

Once you have submitted your initial contact, you will hopefully be contacted for an interview. Once it is scheduled, make sure you have the appropriate outfit for the job. Regardless of whether the job will require you to wear professional dress clothing, it is important to dress professionally for the interview. Men should wear a dark business suit, and women should wear a suit or comparable outfit. Dark colors are often recommended by business professionals because they are thought to convey confidence and professionalism. A woman can add a stand out accessory. Keep colors subtle, but you can still add something classy to stand out.

Once your clothing is chosen, gather what you want to take the interview. You should bring additional copies of paperwork initially sent to the company, a notepad for taking notes, and a pen. It might be a good idea to prep for the interview. Scan employment books or online job sites for sample interview questions. Many of the questions you will be asked are standard, so have an idea how to present yourself. Be familiar with both the position for which you have applied and the company‘s history. Need Help With Your Cover Letters And Resumes

Many of you have been struggling when sending your resume out countless times with absolutely no response. When you apply are you sending a personalized Cover Letter with your resume or application?

I have found so many people that do not, or well, I send one out once in a while. Then I look at a copy of it and it so bland, boring, and generic. If I were a hiring manager it would insult me actually, I want to be impressed when reviewing cover letters and resumes. Guess which resume pile you just ended up in...

I strongly advise you to write a great Cover Letter, it should be as great as your Resume! Have it in your documents and address each one directly to the person who will be reviewing it. Do "triple time" trying to find out this person's name, (do your homework).

I Need Help With My Resume

What is wrong with your resume?

Do you even know why you are not getting any call backs?

Is it formatted like a text message or is it two or three pages of nothing but bullet points on every line.

The job seeker has discovered a new word (bullet point). The bullet has been overwhelmingly abused!

When I look at some of these resumes my eyes actually hurt from two pages of just bullet points.

The bullet point is supposed to emphasize on something special, it is suppose to focus on a special achievement or highlight in your career. Not on every single line of your resume.

Consider revamping yours if it looks like this. Professional resumes should look eye catching, organized and pleasant to read. If you are not able to do this on your own then you might want to search for some assistance from a resume writing service, they could increase your chances of getting a job 100 fold.

When Was The Last Time You Went To A Job Fair Or Career Event

In today’s financial crisis so many people are unemployed from being laid off or terminated and the worse their companies completely shut their doors and went out of business. It is really getting scary out there in the real world. Individuals that have been at the same job since they began working right out of school are now totally at a loss and not knowing what to do or where to begin. Some of these poor souls don’t even know what a resume writing service is, let alone know how to begin building one. And without it you will not even be considered or acknowledged at this point in time. An example would be that when you graduated from high school and went in to a local facility and applied for a position and applied for an assembly position, hired, promoted, and move up the chain all the way to an executive position. Well, 6 months ago the company went bankrupt and closed their doors for good; you were given a three week notice of this, now what? You need a job right now and have no idea where to begin, you have heard vague comments on job fairs, something about cover letters and resumes. But how to begin, and where to start!

Are you worried, well you should be; because there are a lot of young, intelligent and well education and ambitious graduates out there struggling to grab the first job that they can find because there are not enough to go around. You need to get ready to show them what you have to offer and how you can stand out above them all.

First things first, locate some local job fairs in your vicinity, just go online and search for a job fairs in such-n-such city. You will be surprised how many there actually are, do some homework on them; who is going to be there are they actually offering hiring companies or just a bunch of colleges trying to sell you a very expensive and saturated course. Don’t waste your time on them; you need to have legitimate companies, not just a bunch of junk.

Look for some reputable employment agencies; they are always a good choice you need someone to represent you as an agent and there are many of them that you can count on! Gather all of your appropriate documents and put together a professional portfolio, even if it is small make it look professional and organized.

Now get out there and do what you’ve got to do. Prepare yourself mentally and physically and gather everything that is important, just in case they ask for it. And please for your sake dress professional. Yes, if you have a suit then wear it. Do not go in shorts and flip flops (it has been done by many still unemployed people). Look and act like you want to get hired, now go get’ em!

The increase is the latest sign that the economic recovery is sustainable and healing in the job market is beginning. Still, the healing is likely to be slow, and most economists don't expect new hiring to be fast enough this year to rapidly reduce the unemployment rate.

The Labor Department said employers added 162,000 jobs in March, the most since the recession began but below analysts' expectations of 190,000. The total includes 48,000 temporary workers hired for the U.S. Census, also fewer than many economists forecast.

Private employers added 123,000 jobs, the most since May 2007.

There are 15 million Americans out of work. More Americans entered the work force last month, which prevented the increase in jobs from reducing the unemployment rate.

Manufacturers added 17,000 jobs, the third straight month of gains. Temporary help services added 40,000, while health care added 37,000. Leisure and hospitality added 22,000.

Even the beleaguered construction industry added 15,000 positions, though that likely reflects a rebound from February, when major snowstorms may have kept many construction workers off payrolls.

The average work week increased to 34 hours from 33.9, a positive sign. Most employers are likely to work current employees longer before they hire new workers.

The department also revised January's job total to show a gain of 14,000, up from a previously reported loss of 26,000. February's job numbers were also revised higher by 22,000 to show a loss of 14,000. The economy has now added jobs in three months since the recession began in December 2007.

Still, more Americans said they were working part-time even though they preferred full-time work. When they and discouraged workers who have given up searching for jobs are included, the "underemployment" rate ticked up to 16.9 percent from 16.8 percent.

And average hourly earnings fell by two cents to $22.47. That shows that high unemployment is enabling companies to hold down wages. Average weekly earnings rose by about $3 to $629.37, partly reflecting the longer work week.

Friday's jobs report follows positive data earlier this week that showed consumers are increasing their spending and manufacturing activity is growing at its fastest pace in more than five years. Economists are increasingly confident that the nation will avoid a "double-dip" recession, in which growth slows after a short burst at the end of last year.

The economy is likely to expand at a roughly 3 percent pace in the current January-to-March quarter, analysts predict. That's roughly half the 5.6 percent pace seen in the final quarter of last year.

Normally, growth in the 3 percent range would be considered respectable. But the nation is emerging from the worst recession since the 1930s. Growth needs to be in the 5 percent range or higher to quickly drive down the unemployment rate. Both the Federal Reserve and Obama administration expect joblessness will remain above 9 percent through the end of this year.

Unemployment tops 20% in eight California counties

The state's jobless rate of 12.5% in January was its worst on record and fifth-highest in the nation.
For many California areas, unemployment rates moved persistently higher in January, indicating that the national economic recovery hasn't yet translated into jobs for the Golden State.

New county-by-county figures released by the state Wednesday showed that in eight counties, more than 1 in 5 people were out of work. Moreover, revised numbers for last year show that fewer people were employed than was previously believed.

The state was one of five, along with Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina, that reached their highest unemployment rates since the government began keeping track in 1976, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. California's was 12.5% in January, up from 12.3% in December.

SAN MATEO, CA (KGO) -- There are some encouraging numbers about unemployment out. The Department of Labor reports job openings rose by about 7.5 percent earlier this year. That's an indication employers are slowly ramping up hiring, but many people are still looking for jobs.

A job seeker had an interview on Tuesday morning, went home, then got a call to come back for a second interview -- now that's encouraging.

The unemployment rate in San Francisco and San Mateo is 8.9 percent. That's down from what it was in December and Manpower says trends look strong.

"What it feels like is, we've passed the tipping point where companies are saying that we are definitely going to hire. It's just a matter of when as opposed to we're not going to hire at all," Bill Lewis from Manpower said.

At the ABC7-sponsored job fair in San Mateo, people brought resumes and hoped to meet representatives from a dozen companies.

Pacific Technology College retrains people who want to make a change. They see growth in medical and green technology.

"Entry level is pharmacy technicians, medical assistants at the present time. And in our green technology we are focusing on renewable energy," Saeed Foudeh from Pacific Technology College said.

Some have to make the difficult decision of a career change. This is Sarah Hadley-O'Neill's fourth job fair in two years.

"There are a lot of people like me who are experienced, but are a liability to a company that wants to hire them at entry level," she said.

The longest line at the fair was for resume analysis. Experts say it may be the most important thing to do when looking for a job. You need to make a good first impression.

"We look at anywhere from 300 to 1,200 resumes for every position available. It has to be outstanding and it has to look eye catching and be presentable immediately," Janis Barat from Resumeprofessionals.org said.

A lot of these job hopefuls have retained positive attitudes.

Don Crawford has been out of work for four months after his bosses cut staff by 50 percent.

"Sometimes it's a blessing in disguise to lose your job," he said.

"One of the things being unemployed has offered me is to lose a bunch of weight," Darren Hickey from San Mateo said.

"It's a full-time job looking for a job," Kathy Caricato from the California Job Journal said.

The next job fair that ABC7 News is co-sponsoring will take place on Tuesday, April 6 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Emeryville.

There have been updates reported by EDD of the continuous layoffs/job loss in San Jose reaching 31,100, with 800 of them just from December. And for the Bay Area they are anticipating 4,700 jobs will be lost in April 2010 as United Motor Manufacturer is expecting to start eliminating jobs too.

What are we to do people?

When we speak to the jobseekers it is heartbreaking. So many folks have been looking for so long, even up to a year and with only a few interviews. They are more than qualified, very well skilled, and educated with absolutely no reason for not being able to find a job. I don’t know about you guys but this is scary.

Especially for those trying to collect their unemployment benefits, what about the ones that are running out of benefits. Obama has promised a third unemployment extension, but what then? Welfare… Tent City?

How To Write A Resume... (Functional)

First you need to do a little homework on yourself. You are going to need to be honest with yourself and be proud of you! Don't leave anything out; if you volunteered in church, member of societies, head coach of base ball team, these things are important. They can show leadership.

Gather your history, and professional work history, write down all of your accomplishments. Now you should look at all of your transferable skills, you have transferable skills that you have used all of your life; such as, (manage time effectively, leadership abilities, able to manage a budget, etc.) This is your time to brag!

Ok, Ready! Now let’s make it eye catching, something that will catch the employers attention immediately. Experiment; start with some borders or horizontal lines with some professional color, olive green, a nice two tone gray, or blue is good too! The first two items that should bring immediate attention is your name and a career title, your name should be big bold and professional, font anywhere from 18 to 24. Next what are you looking for, are you in sales, or plumbing? I don’t know unless you say so. Your contact info is very secondary. Font should only be about 9/10.

Ok now, DO NOT USE an Objective (Looking to find a job to utilize my skills and to grow). They do not care if you want to grow or be comfortable. They want to know what you have to give to them to bring in revenue and to make them the best company. What have you accomplished, what can you bring to them. IT IS NOT ABOUT YOU. Example: “Demonstrated success in exceeding sales by 200% in less than 6 month, bringing sales up to $1.5M.” You need a summary of you and your proven accomplishments, (about 1 or 2 short paragraphs is great).

Next some organized columns of “Areas of Expertise” this is where your actual skills and transferable skills come in. Use about 3 or 4 for each column; the next section is Professional Accomplishments. Let’s say you’ve had 8 years in management, 5 years in customer service. Break them up into sections, first management: Provide everything that you have accomplished in management, proven abilities. Revenues that you have increased, % and or $ amounts are very important. You need to use some rich key words depending on your history and where you are applying. Do the same for the customer service, then bullet point on them. Now, list the companies that you worked your title and dates. Follow this with your education, volunteer or memberships.

This resume represents you; make it the best that it can be…… You just need to spend some quality time putting this together; you cannot just throw it together. No one will call you if it looks like a text message.

New Year - Time to get back to work on getting back to work

Happy New Year To All,
Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday, but now it is time to get back to your job search. But with a whole new strategy and outlook. Do you truly prepare yourselves for an interview properly? Lets say that you have submitted your resume to "Google" and they liked your resume and you have an interview with them in three days. How are you going to prepare yourself for this, besides making yourself sick from anxious anxiety.

Get to work, prepare a packet for the interviewer(s) be safe and have at least four or five with you. Preparation is important, you really want this job so show it! Purchase the clear presentation folders, I believe that they come in packs of 6 for about $3.00 at Office Max. Print your resume on quality paper, first insert your well written cover letter or profile, next will be the perfect resume with NO typo's, next any letters of recommendation (if you could have at least two that would be fantastic), following would be any certificates, or licenses or such related material. Possibly patents and photos, do not go over board but you must show what you are capable of and be proud of your work and achievements. Next prepare two pages, one with only professional references and the other with personal references. Most places ask for both, so having them well written, again on professional paper shows your professionalism. Look them over, make sure they are perfect, all in the same order.

Next you are going to do your homework on Google, pull up there company website, go into their about us page and career page, study them and make notes; how many employees do they have, what type of positions do they have available, what is their mission and goal. Is there a job description of the position that you have applied for, if so print it off, study it. This is what they are looking for so what kind of questions are they going to ask me? It will be primarily focused on my qualifications for this particular job and my work history. So prepare answers to the most likely questions. Write them down and keep them. Now that you know about the company the job description and other pertinent info prepare YOUR questions for them for when it becomes your turn. Now, turn the interview around! Be professional, be confident and interview THEM! You know what they want, now what do they have to offer you, don't be rude or arrogant. Ask them questions that you really need to know on what they have to offer to you. I have done this, and it works. The interviewer instantly saw my professional confidence and that I was able to handle a situation. I was hired instantly!

I hope that you are all having a wonderful holiday season. My heart goes out to those unemployed, and unable to have the Christmas you were hoping for. That is why it is so important not to give up, there are jobs out there! The competition is just very high, you must show them that you are the one!

A Portfolio can be a very strong tool for any professional in their career. Do you have one? Depending upon your career history is how it should be put together. Let's say that you are an engineer, Don't skimp on this one... Have a nice leather bound portfolio, possibly start with a profile of yourself, a well written resume, followed by possibly (depending) on a biography. Do you have a list of patents? You will insert these along with photo's and any pertinent information to these. Do not be afraid to show off, be proud, brag a lil'. Next you will have certificates, licenses, etc., followed by letters of recommendation, commendations.

If you are a skilled professional whether you are in a job search or not you need this! If you are not confident in doing your own, then hire a professional, in fact just like a resume. Do not do your own resume, hire a professional resume writer, preferable one that does portfolio's too. Maybe they will put together a bundle package together for you.

EDD (Unemployment Insurance)

Why does EDD put everyone through that last check scare tactic. You finally think things are going OK, you are at least able to pay rent, buy some groceries and have gas money. Your out looking for work like you should be doing and you check the mail. As you see that envelope you can feel the blood leave your face, you can feel it in your eyes, you get an instance stomach ache. Then you open the envelope and THERE IT IS! Your unemployment has been discontinued immediately! Please call or email our office. Do you know that you can know longer reach a live person over the phone at EDD, you send 5 emails with no response at all. Then you visualize losing your home, where am I going to live, how am I going to pay my bills, what will happen to my pets. This whole scenario falls in front of you, you almost can't function for the fear that has been instilled in you. Then all of a sudden about a week later, you get another letter thanking you for your patience you have been re-activated or what ever they call it. You will be receiving your next check on such date. Why do they do this to a persons life?

Video Resume vs Video Profile

OK Guys,

I need your opinion, whether it is called a video resume or a video profile. Why are people so reluctant in putting their best foot forward right away to get the job. Someone first started calling it a video resume, but it is not. It is a brief introduction of yourself, 60 seconds or less just to show your character, personality, and a brief cap of your achievements and what you have to bring to a company. There is nothing resume about it!

No matter what it should be appropriately named. Why won't you do it?

OK, How many of you have been struggling sending your resume out countless times with absolutely no response. I would like to know, when you apply are you sending a personalized Cover Letter with your resume or application?

I have found so many people that do not, or well, I send one out once in a while. Then I look at a copy of it and it so bland, boring, and generic. If I were a hiring manager it would insult me actually. Guess which resume pile you just ended up in...

I strongly advise you to put together a great Cover Letter, it should be as Great as your Resume! Have it in your documents and address each one directly to the person who will be reviewing it. You do "triple time" trying to find out this person's name, (do your homework).

OK guys, lets go... Get out of bed and off the couch and get out there and find your future. It's shameful everyone is so upset and worried... oh I can't find a job... no one is calling be back... Well you know what... I call clients to confirm appointments or to possibly offer a promotion or (whatever) to assist them in getting back to work. I will call around 10:30 or 11:00 am and GUESS WHAT! I wake them up. What the H.... Quit feeling sorry for yourself, get a fantastic resume done. Great companies are offering free job coaching, special events trying to help who? YOU, and you can't even get out of bed before noon. Give me a break.

Are you ready to deal with EDD, hopefully you won't have to. But, for those that do it is best to face the facts that they are OVERWHELMED. At this point in time patience and honesty is your best friend with them. Provide all of the information that they require, have everything ready when your phone appointment is scheduled. The person on the other end is looking for sincerity in you. If they feel in their gut that you are truly doing your part in this financial crisis they will assist you the best that they can. And, the rest is up to the computer systems, oh no! now were in trouble!
My advise is to have a great Resume along with an enthusiastic Cover Letter and do your best, if you are having trouble with writing your own there are many well qualified professional resume services available.
